A few ways to ignite a kinder community

One of the things we hear repeatedly about our community is how friendly and kind people are. Folks move here because of it. We see weekly posts on social media by local citizens reaching out to say thanks for making a difference — often to someone they don’t even know.

A key factor in a strong community is a sense of connection. When doing a kind deed for someone else, you and the other person both experience connection. Connection affects us emotionally and physically in positive ways. Social connection can lower anxiety and depression, help us regulate our emotions, lead to higher self-esteem and empathy, and actually improve our immune systems.

Are you looking for ways to feel good about yourself and help others, too? Here are a few to try:

  • Make eye contact, smile, and spark a conversation. …
  • Give a sincere compliment. …
  • Pay it forward. …
  • Volunteer your time. …
  • Clean up, clean up. …
  • Let someone in a hurry go in front of you. …
  • Donate. …
  • Hold the door open
  • Give someone the better parking space
  • Make a positive remark on social media.
